Get Your Grill On

May is National Grilling Month and we are Chicagoans, so clearly I have a stance on getting your grill on! I popped in to visit my favorite ladies at WCIU You & Me This Morning to chat about clean, lean, + tasty items I bring to the table all-summer-long.

If you missed the segment, watch here

Hot Dogs, Duh!

It starts with the always amazing Applegate hot dogs, or the cleaner wieners as we call them. Not only do they come in turkey, chicken, + beef, but they a   re organic and they have no added nitrites or chemical preservatives while tasting GREAT. This is a win-win! I adorn my dog with some creative toppings like: horseradish sauce, grilled jalapenos, grilled onions with cayenne pepper, grilled bell peppers, + my famous APL bacon guacamole.

Veggies:

Think of the standard grilling veggies and go the opposite direction to try new things! I LOVE to grill fennel, leeks, romaine lettuce, + green beans (which I toss into a grilled purple potato salad with horseradish dressing – stay tuned for that recipe.)  Just brush the veggies with some cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil and you’ve got it.

Fruit:

Rather than going for the obvious, I like to mix it up on the grill for dessert. Pineapple, peaches, + plantains are my 3 P’s when it comes to sweet treats for after a meal in summertime. I serve them on a platter fondue style with some freshly made coconut whipped cream. Done and done!

Bread:

Anything + everything in the bread department is best to grill. Trust. But my ultimate favorite is grilling a fresh muffin + then dipping it in some creme fraiche. It is a requirement in my house to grill your buns, toss french toast on the grill (this is actually great as a bun for your next hot dog- don’t laugh until you try it,) + even some tortillas can be better when grilled up until nice + browned.

You Can Grill Indoors:

Don’t be fooled, this Chicago-born chick doesn’t like to mess with Mother Nature despite having dealt with her all my life. So, I opted to head to JC Penny’s + buy myself an 11″ Cook’s grill pan that is pre-seasoned + cast-iron so it heats so evenly…it’s a grillers dream! In fact, I used it to prep for this segment so I didn’t get blown off my balcony with the wind!
